Crying Laughing by Lance Rubin

Crying Laughing by Lance Rubin

I enjoy comedy (standup, improv, and sketch), but I haven’t made a study of it so some of the references in this book flew over my head. But most of this book hit right in the feels.  Winnie’s voice feels authentic to a typical smart teen (with anxiety) and I loved her family’s dynamic. In particular, I was cracking up at Mr. Martinez’s mixed-signals message (which was so spot-on to a lot of the performances I had in high school marching band, drama, etc.) and related heavily to Winnie’s own sense of being adrift when her home life began to […]

Wyvern Wednesdays: July 21st

Wyvern Wednesdays: July 21st

Feeling I’ve caught a bit of hope, partially after making changes to prioritize my mental health (remove constant triggers) and physical health (making yet more appointments). Thinking About How I can balance things such that I’m not tempted to go overboard, since my hyper-focus recently returned in spades. Also, ways to ensure I do actually sit and read a book or watch TV for an hour a day. Plotting My contributions to Austen in August!  Working On Cooking every day, such that I use all the vegetables in my weekly CSA delivery (which is surprisingly difficult, considering I’m only one […]

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

What a fun historical fiction adventure this story was! Henry is a great protagonist- very flawed, but also sympathetic, and who can’t related to being madly in love with their (not interested) best friend? Beyond the romance, this has a lot of action/adventure, intrigue, and fun. The Georgian period during which it takes place was a bawdy, dangerous time with a lot of political and social upheaval, so this (nicely) didn’t feel anachronistic at all. I really enjoyed it, and it helped pull me through some rough nights and life slumps the week and a half or so that it […]

BuJo Tour – July

BuJo Tour – July

For July, I finally went with the Celestial Sea theme I had hoped to make my entire BuJo about (until I figure out how to draw sea creatures, I have to rely on stickers, so here we are). I’m still enamored of celestial sea and maybe in 2022 I can stick to it all year. Or at least every other month? I bet I found find an easy watercolor guide to sea life (coral reefs, at the least) and starscapes, I just lack the spoons these days. August’s theme will be Café, thank to an abundance of coffee and pasty stickers […]

Sophrona in June, part 2

Sophrona in June, part 2

Sunderlin Ghost Hunt  Sophrona and Primrose arrive early, their footmen bringing in divans and arranging them in one of the 3rd floor guest rooms so that they may have a comfortable place to retire. Sophrona hands out bottles of fine Madeira in the entryway to Lady Ashbrooke, Captain Sunderlin & Colonel Molyenux, Lady Merriweather, and Marquess Petty-Fitzmaurice. She is soon parted from Primrose but, mindful of the schemes she has hatched with Countess Grove and her resolution to allow Primrose her freedom, Sophrona starts by wandering the Terrace Garden and Italian Garden. She thinks she may have seen a passing […]
